1910 Valuation Office Survey

This survey was carried out as a part of the implementation of Lloyd George's Finance (1909-1910) Act . This was at a time when roads, water supplies, sewerage and other infrastructure were being developed with public money. The function of the act was that land holdings should be taxed on the basis of the increase in their value due to the improved infrastructure. It was the site value, the value of the land without buildings, which was used as the basis of calculation. A baseline survey was to be carried out which would allow the so called "increment value duty" to be calculated.

The main information of interest to local and family history researchers is detail about the property. There are two main sets of written records. One is the Valuation Book, of which there is one for the parish of Llangadog. Every property was given a number, and there is a single line of information. There is also a set of Field Books. Each property has 4 pages in a field book, and that is where a description of the site and buildings and their use can be found. I have only seen a very few of these.

The map below is part of the map for Llangadog. Moving the cursor over a property will bring up information about that property to the right of the map. You do not need to click the mouse.. Again, this is a work in progress. I have not yet transcribed all the lines in the valuation book.
